Did you know February 13 is National Get a Different Name Day? So, if you’re looking to take advantage of the holiday this year, rest assured, the process to change your name is generally simple.

If you’re recently married, including the last name on your marriage license is sufficient to identify a name change. That document can be used as proof to change your name on other forms of identification, such as your passport, Driver’s License, or work credentialing.

Similarly, if you’re divorced or adopted, your court order finalizing the adoption or divorce will dictate that your name can be changed. Again, that order will allow you to obtain new identifying papers, and in the case of adoption specifically, a new birth certificate.

Now, if you don’t have a significant life event that operates to change your name, there is always an option to petition the court for a change. You’ll need to supply a reason to the Court why your name should be changed and provide proof of birth and a filing fee. For children, notice may also need to be given to another legal parent or guardian and additional factors are considered. A court will review the petition and determine whether to allow you to change your name. Common reasons for a denial of your request may include an inappropriate selection, an attempt to change your name for fraudulent or illegal reasons, or, in the case of a child, that the change is not in their best interest.

Through whatever method you choose, remember to provide proof of the name change to all applicable agencies or entities, including, the Social Security Administration, Department of Motor Vehicles, US Department of State, the post office, banks and other financial institutions (don’t forget about your 401k!), your employer or payroll company, insurance companies, utility companies or other service providers, schools, and any entity you may be credentialed or certified through.
